Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen in the Winter?

02 Nov, 2023

We get asked this question all the time.  The answer is a resounding YES! While the sun’s rays may not feel as strong or warm on your skin, the ultraviolet (UV) rays are still very potent, breaking down your skin cells resulting in photoaging.  The sun’s UV rays are harmful during this time of year because the ozone layer is at its thinnest. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we’re actually closer to the sun during the winter. So even though temperatures may be cooler because of the tilt of the earth, we’re physically closer to the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Which UV Rays are more Harmful?

Dr. Naqvi explains the difference between the two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB.  “UVA is always present and can penetrate clouds, glass windows and go deeper into the skin.  Because UVA penetrates deeper skin layers, damaging the collagen and elastin resulting in acceleration of fine lines, wrinkles, premature aging and skin cancer.  UVB rays are more prevalent on sunny days and damage more superficial layers of the skin causing sunburns.  Both types of rays are responsible for various types of skin cancer, age spots and melasma.” So the answer is both.  But, the damage doesn’t stop with UV exposure.

The Dangers are even Indoors

Even if you work in an office all day long, you shouldn’t skip sunscreen. This is especially true if you sit near a window or drive to work. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, glass blocks UVB rays well, but not UVA rays. The same goes for glass windows on planes, buses, and in cars, per the Skin Cancer Foundation. Even this small dose of sunlight may impact your skin. One study found that people sitting near windows had more wrinkles and deeper crow’s feet on the side of their faces exposed to the window. Of course, there’s also the blue light from computers and screens that may be a concern. Some research shows too much blue light exposure may lead to cell abnormalities and death. But the jury is still out exactly what blue light does to the skin as other research shows blue light might be effective for treating acne. Either way, smoothing on sunscreen isn’t going to hurt.

Which Sunscreen is Best for Me this Winter?

Everyone should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays and has at least SPF 30 protection, which blocks about 97% of harmful UV rays. Ultimately, though, the best winter sunscreen for you is the one that best meets your unique needs.
