Teeth Whitening ––––––

What is Laser Teeth Whitening?

Laser teeth whitening is a speedy and effective way to deal with several dental issues including gum disease, dental decay and of course teeth whitening.

The procedure is a very effective way to brighten your smile without removing any of the tooth’s surface or causing damage to the teeth.

Although all teeth whitening procedures work by releasing oxygen ions from a tooth whitening gel, which gently lifts stains from the teeth. Advancements in technology have allowed laser teeth whitening to activate the hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide solution faster, thus producing the desired results more quickly and in fewer treatments.

What are the Benefits of Laser Teeth Whitening?

  • The effects are visible the same day
  • Laser technology helps achieve the best results
  • Results can be achieved in one dental appointment lasting 30 minutes

What type of stains can be removed by laser teeth whitening?

Laser teeth whitening can be useful in removing the two types of dental tooth discoloration.

Exterior Tooth Discoloration

Smoking and consuming certain foods and beverages that contain tannins such as carrots, oranges, coffee, tea, and wine can over time darken or yellow your teeth.

Because these stains are on the outer layers of your teeth, removing the stains is easier. Some whitening toothpaste can help eliminate these stains, but laser teeth whitening provides better more lasting results.

Internal Tooth Discoloration

This type of stain is usually caused by high levels of fluoride, tetracycline, use of antibiotics as a child, developmental disorders, tooth decay, restorations, root canal issues, and trauma. These factors cause internal changes to in the tooth enamel and the dentin, resulting in discoloration of the exterior of the teeth.

Because the stain originates in the interior of the tooth, professional whitening treatments like laser teeth whitening are needed to remove them. The use of whitening toothpaste’s or whitening strips will not remove them.

How is the procedure done?

During the procedure, your mouth must remain open and your teeth exposed, because of this, the provider will use a rubber guard to help you keep your mouth open.

Afterward, the provider will apply a protective gel to your gums to prevent them from coming in contact with the whitening solution.

Once this is done, the whitening solution will be applied to each tooth that is being treated, and a laser is used to activate the compound.

The compound will be allowed to remain on the teeth for a few minutes before being vacuumed with a special tool. This process will be repeated several times depending on the severity of the stain.

At the end of the treatment session, the provider will carefully rinse your mouth and gently remove the protective layer from your gums and the guard.

What to expect

The laser teeth whitening treatment will not prevent new stains from forming, results typically last between 6-months to several years depending on your eating, drinking and smoking habits.

Some patients report increased sensitivity especially in the first few days after treatment. Not everyone will experience this sensitivity, but those who do generally report mild symptoms, if you experience severe sensitivity or pain, the doctor can prescribe medication to avoid or reduce the symptoms. This sensitivity will wear off in a few days.
